LED vs CFL – Which one is better?

Electricity used by incandescent bulb over the lifetime costs 5 to 10 times more that the price of the bulb. This is not a very cost effective option of lighting. Light Emitting Diode (LED) and Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) bulbs provide very energy efficient lighting. That’s why, the demand for this types of bulbs are so high today. Here are the differences in characteristics between the two types of bulbs

LED

  • They are small and are grouped in clusters.
  • Their light is directional. But diffusers are now used to expand the use of LED lights.
  • The initial cost is higher, but it is more cost effective than CFL in the long run. In fact, they last up to 10 times longer than CFL lights.
  • LEDs are solid bulbs and have no filaments. So they can withstand shocks like bumping or jarring. This makes them more durable.
  • LEDs don’t build up heat. They remain cool.
  • They are mercury free.
  • They are more energy efficient than CFLs. They use up to 1/3rd of the energy used by CFLs.
  • LEDs require low power to operate; so, are suitable for portable purposes.

CFL

  • They are four times more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer.
  • Their initial cost is less compared to LED.
  • It reduces pollution. CFL cuts half tons of carbon dioxide emitted into the air over the bulb’s light.
  • It produces high quality lights. Unlike the cool white light of fluorescents, they give out warm lights.
  • The fact that LED produces directional lights, limits its applicability. But CFL are versatile and cany be used anywhere, from table lamps to porch lights.

Both LED and CFL have their advantages and disadvantages. You should choose one that is suitable for your purpose.
